Near the end of May, a North Carolina man was arrested for allegedly stealing merchandise from a store located in the Charlotte area. This individual has been charged with several counts of misdemeanor larceny. A conviction on these charges could have significant criminal and personal consequences.
According to a news report, on May 26, the accused — a 41-year-old male — was taken into custody by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. He is believed to have stolen over $500 worth of goods from Target. The alleged crimes supposedly occurred at the store located at 900 Metropolitan Avenue, over the course of about a month.
The charges alone have already taken a toll on the accused’s professional life. This individual is a firefighter with the Charlotte Fire Department and has been for over a decade. Because of the criminal charges, he has been placed on leave pending the results of the investigation. If allowed to return to work, he will be assigned to a new post.
The consequences for misdemeanor larceny charges vary from a short stint in jail and a minor fine to a longer time behind bars and a fine amount that is set by a judge. Any of the penalties that may accompany a conviction could negatively affect the accused in various ways. At this point, it is unclear when this individual will address his case in a North Carolina criminal court. No matter when he does it, who he has at his side matters. By reviewing the facts of the situation and questioning evidence, an experienced criminal defense attorney may be able to help the accused achieve a case dismissal, a reduction in charges or, at least, alternative sentencing.
